During the minor Meaningful Data Design we were asked to design a physical information object that consisted digital landscape data of the Drunense Duinen near Den Bosch in the Netherlands.
The main goal was to translate abstract information (heights of dunes through the years) into a meaningful visualisation.
And then there was light.
Emmory and I came up with the idea of a “dunelamp”, with a rather industrial look. A lamp that could fit in your living room to provide a source of ambient light, as well as a nice instrument with interactive – glowing – data.
We used Arduino to visualize the data and translated (mapped) the dune-heights in years to certain levels of neopixels inside an acrylic diffuse tube. The levels of light are interactive and “scrollable” through the years starting from 2001. We then created a second lamp, to visualize the differences of two locations – so users could understand the variable height in dunes from the past 15 years.
